Padma Bridge will be opened to traffic next June

Dhaka, Bangladesh - September 22, 218: The Padma Bridge seen under-construction across the Padma River at Janjira point in Shariatpur, Bangladesh on September 22, 2018. The under-construction Padma Multipurpose Bridge will be largest bridge in Bangladesh and it will be the 25th longest road bridge in the world. The Bridge will connect the south-west of the country to the northern and eastern regions. At 6.15 km length, the Padma Bridge is a mega project which will be completed by 2019, according to Project experts. Bangladesh will be celebrates country’s 50 years birthday in 2021.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today said the much-awaited Padma Multipurpose Bridge will be opened for vehicular movement next June, BSS reports.

“Ninety-six percent of bridge’s main works have already been completed and the overall progress of the project is around 90.50 percent,”  Quader, also general secretary of the ruling Awami League, told journalists after a view-exchange meeting with different bridges division officials in the capital this morning.

Bridges Division secretary M Manjur Hossen was also present at the meeting.

The minister said 80 percent construction works of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel beneath the river Kornophuli in Chattogram also has been completed.

“We are working to complete the project by December this year,” he added.

Of the three phases of Dhaka Elevated Expressway, Quader said, about 787.50 percent works of the first phase of the expressway have already been completed, adding that the working progress of Banani-Maghbazar part of the expressway is 31 percent.

The Minister instructed the officials concerned to further speed up the work of the project.

Replying to the verdict of retired army Major Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan murder case trial, the ruling party leader said the verdict of the trial proved that the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina believes in rule of law.

Later, Indian Ambassador in Bangladesh Vikram Kumar Doraiswami made a courtesy call with the minister at his secretariat office.
